Polly Melick started her formal training at Red Dragon Karate in 1990 under Grandmaster Al Smith, in Easton, Pa. Grandmaster Smith taught Kenshinkan Shorin Ryu, Kun Tao, and Kenpo.
In 2002 She and her husband Gary opened the Golden Dragon Karate School after deciding to seek the more traditional style of Matsumura Okinawan Shorin Ryu. There dojo is located in Alpha, NJ.
Mrs. Melickmet Shihan Frank Williams back in the early 1990’s when he would visit New Jersey and Pennsylvania for tournaments and she would travel to North Carolina for tournaments. She and her husband joined the UMAA nearly 10 years ago.
In July 2009 she visited Okinawa for the first time to train with Yoshimatsu Akamine in Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu at his dojo in Haebaru and at his 15 acre retreat near Nago. She and her husband currently study under Akamine Yoshimatsu and teach Matsumura seito Shorin Ryu.
She currently serves as the New Jersey State Director for the UMAA and in December 2009 was appointed to the UMAA Renshi Board by the UMAA Board of Advisors.
