All Styles and Systems
Each individual joining UMAA as an "Annual" member is issued an Association Membership Certificate and UMAA Patch.
Upon meeting the requirements for rank certification in the members specific style or system, the member can receive UMAA Rank Certification. Both Kyu and Dan level certificates are provided by UMAA for all Styles and Systems of Martial Arts.

certificate, and distinctive Life Member Patches. For members requesting promotion with
the UMAA for their specific style or system, members are required to
submit a copy of their most recent promotion certificate in order to
be issued a UMAA promotion certificate or to be eligible for future
UMAA promotions. Members in areas where there is no National, Regional,
State Director may ask to be tested for promotion via video.
Shorin Ryu Karate and Kobudo
The Shorin Ryu Karate and the Kobudo Transition programs have specific promotion requirements set out by UMAA. Details for the Shorin Ryu Karate and Kobudo curriculum are outlined on the Rank Requirement page.
The HEAD INSTRUCTOR will also receive his/her UMAA Rank Certificates in Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate or Kobudo after completing all promotion requirements. Additional time in grade requirements for all Black belts will be waived for Schools/Organizations transitioning.
The School (or organization) will be issued a UMAA School/Dojo (or organization) registration certificate or charter. The HEAD INSTRUCTOR will also receive a Certificate that recognizes his/her "rank" in his/her previous style practiced.
Promotion certifications up to Sandan (3rd Dan) may be performed by State/Regional Directors or other licensed senior instructors in the grade of Yondan (4th Dan) and above.
All members requesting re-certification for Yondan (4th Dan) or higher, must be approved by the President and the Board of Directors. This requirement is the same for all Teachers Licenses (Renshi, Shihan, Kyoshi). Kyu rankings for the transition dojo's students can be processed through the UMAA via the dojo head instructor. After re-certification of the dojo head instructor he/she may promote his/her students through the normal process via UMAA. The National, Regional and State Directors should attend all black belt testing if possible.
